After many years of providing one-day vernal pool workshops, The Ohio Vernal Pool Network, a team effort of Ohio Wetlands Association and Midwest Biodiversity Institute is taking our expertise and experience to the next level. We expanded our format to become a 3-day conference in 2019 at Ashland University, shared a monthly virtual presentation during spring 2021, and are hosting an in-person 3-day conference in 2022 in Cambridge, Ohio. These conferences provide more depth and breadth of vernal pool topics than we can provide in a one-day format and allow for great opportunities for networking and exploring vernal pools around the state. From previous conferences, over 90% of participants responded that they learned something new that they will apply in your work, future decisions, and/or lifestyle. Vernal Poolooza 2022 will be at the Salt Fork Park Lodge and Conference Center on March 24, 25 and 26. Salt Fork lodge has catering and lodge available as well as conference rooms for presentations. Ohio Vernal Pool Network have secured Keynote speakers for the two evening sessions, David FitzSimmons, an award-winning photographer and writer, well known for his Curious Critters series, and Thomas Biebighauser, author and professional performer of wetland restoration and owner of “Wetland Restoration and Training, LLC.” Several nearby locations will provide superior vernal pool experiences and learning opportunities.

HISTORY OF EARTH DAY AT KENT STATE UNIVERSITY

Celebrating the anniversary of the first Earth Day, April 22, 1970. "More than 20 million Americans participated in one of the largest grassroots community service movements in our history during the first Earth Day in 1970. Earth Day is now celebrated every year by almost 1 billion people worldwide." -

In 1970, Earth Day founder U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson came up with the idea for a national teach-in day to focus on the environment. April 22, 1970, was the date selected because it fell between spring break and final exams. In April 1970, , along with other colleges and universities across the nation, participated in the national environmental teach-in known as "Earth Day."  hosted a series of events on campus known as "Think Week" in 1970, including having Stewart Udall, former Secretary of Interior, and Ralph Nader, environmental advocate and consumer champion, speak on campus.
