WKSU Wins Two Regional Murrow Awards
WKSU 89.7 recently received two Regional Murrow Awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association. The station was recognized in the categories of News Series and Excellence in Video.
The category of News Series is for single subjects reported in multiple parts. In early 2020, the WKSU news team tackled the topic of recycling with the series Reduce, Reuse, Refocus. Multiple features provided information on everything from how recycling works to what can – or can’t – be recycled.
For the Excellence in Video category, videos must creatively cover a single subject in a single subject. WKSU received the honor for an informational video on how to vote by mail during the 2020 presidential election. The video was a part of the Election Protection series.
WKSU competes in Region 7 with stations in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Illinois. Regional winners are automatically considered for a National Murrow award.
The RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Awards are among the most prestigious in broadcast and digital news. RTDNA has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Murrow set as a standard for the profession of broadcast and digital journalism.
Trumbull Campus Students Complete First Year of Addictions Counseling Certificate Program
Trumbull Campus launched the Addictions Counseling Certificate Program (ACCP) in Fall 2020. This summer, five students are completing the program with a practicum where they will engage in real-world experience. The program consists of five courses and should be completed in one calendar year.
"We are excited to offer this program," said Barb Ozimek, ºÚÁÏÍø Trumbull’s full-time mental health counselor, and certificate program coordinator. "The need for addiction professionals was great before the pandemic and I think it's become more critical because of the pandemic."
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, projections indicate a 22.3 percent increase in demand for Substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselor positions between 2014 and 2024.
By completing just the first course in the program, students can apply to become a chemical dependency counselor assistant (CDCA) with credentials from the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board.
The certificate program prepares students with all the requisite training hours for licensure eligibility as a chemical dependency counselor in Ohio, issued by the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board. The certificate supplements existing ºÚÁÏÍø Degree Programs such as Psychology and Justice Studies. The certificate also allows in-career professionals to specialize in addictions counseling (e.g., nurses, clergy, rehabilitation counselors, mental health therapists) or it can be a stand-alone certificate.
For more information about the Addictions Counseling Certificate Program, visit Trumbull's website. For Kent Campus's program, visit the Counselor Education and Supervision website.
Student Affairs Administration: A Pillar of the Division of Student Affairs
Note: This is the final part of a four-day series discussing the pillars within the Division of Student Affairs and how they benefit the students at ºÚÁÏÍø. Today we are focusing on the Student Affairs Administration pillar, including University Health Services, DSA Finance Office, HR/Personnel, Assessment and Strategic Planning, and Information Technology.
When the Division of Student Affairs unveiled their three-year strategic plan earlier this year, it provided a glimpse into the immediate future with a roadmap to how a true world-class experience for the students at ºÚÁÏÍø would be accomplished.
Through both the intricate assessment and strategic planning process it has helped lay the foundation for a bright future at the University, all playing a major role in this particular pillar to serve students as effectively and efficiently as possible.
"Student Affairs Administration provides critical support to all division departments in supporting and advancing the division's vision, mission, and strategic plan," said Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of University Health Services, Julie Volchek. "We provide departments recommendations and guidance on integrated financial and personnel strategies to increase the efficiency of resources and effectiveness of planning and implementation."
