黑料网 Journalism Students Tour National News Studios in NYC, Film CNN Segment

Ten students in 黑料网鈥檚 School of Journalism and Mass Communication recently visited New York City with the spring 2016 Advanced TV News Producing course. Five student reporters and five producers visited the studios of ABC Nightline, CNN, Fox News, Good Morning America, MSNBC and WABC during a five-day visit.

鈥淵ou see CNN on TV, you see Fox, MSNBC, but you never actually picture yourself in the studio or on the set of a place like CNN,鈥 says 黑料网 student Vivian Feke. 鈥淕etting to see it firsthand was such a worthwhile opportunity and I鈥檓 so grateful for it. It helped me realize that this is something I can see myself doing and something I can actually see myself doing after I graduate.鈥

The trip is integrated into the Advanced Producing course, in which students are working on long-form stories throughout the semester ranging from retirement pieces, the heroin epidemic and the upcoming Republican National Convention.

LuEtt Hanson, associate dean of 黑料网鈥檚 College of Communication and Information, and Gary Hanson, 黑料网 journalism professor, chaperoned the trip.

This trip has been taking place for several years. John Butte, lecturer and coordinator of career services for the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, coordinates the trip each year, using his personal network to plan agency tours. Gannett Company, a media holding company that owns WKYC in Cleveland, funds the trip, which comes at practically no cost to student attendees.

Butte believes the trip provides students with insight on the strategy and thinking behind news shows and programming.

This year, students had the opportunity to network with CNN anchor and 黑料网 alumna Carol Costello, .

鈥淗aving the opportunity to talk to people in the field who were able to reassure you that it is possible, you can obtain this dream if you work for it 鈥 that was a great experience,鈥 says Ian Klein, senior journalism student.

Meeting big names, such as Costello and Byron Pitts, co-anchor of ABC鈥檚 Nightline, was beneficial, but just as beneficial was the opportunity to network with staff members at each studio.

鈥淓ven when talking to staff members who didn鈥檛 have famous names, they all started from the same place our students start from 鈥 being willing to work hard in an internship, being wiling to do what was asked,鈥 says LuEtt Hanson. 鈥淚 think it helped our students realize that maybe they could do that too.鈥
