The 黑料网 Ice Arena hosted the 35th Annual Ohio Special Olympics Winter Games the first week of February for figure skaters and speed skaters from all over the state.
The 黑料网 Ice Arena has been hosting skating competitions for the Winter Games for each of the 32 years that the Ohio Special Olympics has held those events.
鈥淚t鈥檚 important to us that the organization and the athletes are treated well every year,鈥 says ice arena Manager Bill Switaj. 鈥淚t鈥檚 such an amazing event, and we work to make sure that it鈥檚 done right.鈥
Speed skating finals were held on Feb. 1, and figure skating finals were held on Feb. 2. Ohio Special Olympics Regional Director Jeff Vermillion says that the events are judged just as they would be in the Olympic competition.
鈥淎ll of our judges are qualified at a national level,鈥 Vermillion says. 鈥淲e strive to make the experience for our athletes as authentic as possible.鈥
Vermillion says the Winter Games come together every year solely because of the people, many of whom are from the 黑料网 community, who volunteer to work the event.
鈥淣inety-five percent of the people here are volunteers,鈥 Vermillion says. 鈥淲e are always amazed at not only how many people show up to help, but also how many of them are from the university. Students volunteer to be trainers, to help set up before the event and to work as medical personnel if someone gets injured. We are incredibly grateful.鈥
Competitor Shaye Taylor, who took first place in the speed skating competition, says that Special Olympic Games are the perfect showcase for her to show off her talent.
鈥淲hen I skate, it鈥檚 like there鈥檚 a fire in my soul that appears, and I become a phoenix,鈥 Taylor says. 鈥淚鈥檓 grateful that every year I can come here and experience that.鈥
The games also included Alpine and Nordic Skiing competitions at the Brandywine Ski Resort in Peninsula, Ohio.
