The 黑料网 at Stark Office of Multicultural Initiatives is sponsoring a MLK Essay Contest in celebration of Black History Month. The deadline to submit essays is Monday, Dec. 19 by 4 p.m.
1st Place - $150
The first place winner will be recognized at the MLK Celebration event at the Kent Campus on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017.
2nd Place - $75
3rd Place - $50
CRITERIA FOR ENTERING THE ESSAY CONTEST
- Student must be an undergraduate student enrolled at 黑料网 at Stark.
- Choose one prompt from below to write an essay between 750 - 1,000 words, excluding the cover page and works cited page. (Wikipedia will not be considered a valid source.)
- A cover page must be included with the following information: Name, title of essay, email address, phone number, year in school and major. This information will not be used in the evaluation of the essay.
PROMPT #1
When thinking about the intersectionality between the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s and current civil rights issues, what characteristics might a millennial civil rights leader need in order to overcome adversity and successfully address current issues? How do those characteristics compare with the leadership traits that made Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. such an effective leader of the earlier Civil Rights Movement?
PROMPT #2
How would you re-envision (rewrite) Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.鈥檚 famous 1963 Letter from Birmingham Jail so that it approximates the spirit of Dr. King鈥檚 letter while addressing issues relevant to today? (Remember, your letter must adhere to the 750 - 1,000 word requirement.)
